The Little Red Lighthouse

What is Globe Star's Little Red Lighthouse Home?

The Little Red Lighthouse home is designed to give temporary weekend care for the purpose of providing relief to the parent or primary caregiver.  It is crucial because it helps with the on-going demands of caring for a family member with special needs.  With respite, families can continue to provide at-home care for a loved one and stay together.

How does the program work?

Individuals come to stay at the Little Red Lighthouse home, located in South Bend, IN.  Weekend stays are from Friday afternoon until Sunday afternoon.  Care is scheduled at least a month in advance.

Who is eligible for services?

Globe Star's respite program cares for persons from 3 years old through adult life.

Eligibility is decided upon completion of a Personal Quality of Life Respite Care Packet and an in-take interview.

Anyone who is within comfortable driving distance of St. Joseph County and has a child or an adult with a physical an/or developmental disability or chronic health condition.

Who provides the services?

Globe Star caregivers provide the services.  The Little Red Lighthouse prides itself on being a family-centered program.  Therefore, caregivers receive on-going staff support and are trained in topics such as, but not limited to:

  • CPR/First Aid
  • Universal Precautions
  • Gentle Teaching

What is the cost for services?

Globe Star may be funded in a variety of ways.

Globe Star is a state-approved respite provider of:

  • Medicaid Waivers
  • Aged & Disabled
  • Autism
  • Developmental Disability
  • Support Services
  • Traumatic Brain Injury

Globe Star's Little Red Lighthouse is named after the famous Little Red Lighthouse in New York City.  This lighthouse was built in 1886 and provided comfort and a true sense of being safe as one traveled down the Hudson River.  Even though the city grew and the Great Gray Bridge became a way of traveling from one side to the other, the Little Red Lighthouse did not disappear.  Today, if you travel to New York City to experience all of its famous places, this Little Red Lighthouse still provides travelers on the Hudson River with a safe journey to their destination.  It is in this spirit that we were inspired to create a respite house that would be a safe and secure place for a temporary stay while also providing Individuals with opportunities to be an active part of their community through participation in meaningful activities.
